Our Story
Cameroon, through its cultural diversity, is one of the few countries in the world where citizens of different religious denominations interact and live together in perfect harmony. This tolerance is based in the preamble of the constitution which recognizes the principle of secularism and guarantees citizens independence regarding their religious practices.
Islam is among the three dominant religions of the country and Muslims are found everywhere and especially in the northern regions of the country as well as in the big cities
Although united in their sociological diversity around a common ideal which *is laa ila’a ha illa lah,Muslims show division due to their fundamental beliefs derived from the Qur’an and Sunnah
Unlike other religions (Catholicism and Protestantism) which are organized on classic and well hierarchical models, the Muslim community is still very unstructured. This lack of structuring in a context of diversity is characterized by a societal model sufficiently compartmentalized between culture, traditions and Islamic foundations (qu’ran and Sunna).
Despite numerous isolated efforts by community leaders, civil society actors and some muslim believers to stimulate an organizational dynamic through organizations using all the means that are possible to them with varied objective, the Muslim community is still quite disorganized and very less prepared to face the challenges and issues of survival and development
To deal with this problem, the new issues and challenges are those of working for a more inclusive Islam focused on strengthening dialogue, support for better representation of Islamic affairs, youth and ethnic diversity within associations, but also and above all the adoption of a better community approach to educational, health and socio-economical development based on the promotion and capitalization of development projects in all localities where Muslim communities are present.
The muslim environment shows many weaknesses that challenge community leaders to more commitment in the educational, health and socio-economical aspects.
On the educational level, the State of Cameroon has set up a secretariat for Islamic education within the Ministry of Basic Education at the head of which a Muslim is appointed to implement the charges related to this area
However, Cameroonian Muslims are unable to capitalize on this opportunity as well as possible because of the disparity between Arabic speakers, well equipped in theology but completely out of step with the system, and other Muslims who are well established in the system but poorly equipped in theology. . In addition, the challenge of increasing the educational offer in a Muslim environment remains very great and deserves special attention.
In terms of health, many shortcomings have been noted in terms of private denominational health services in a Muslim environment, but also weak development of community health mutuals. Aware of the absence of a network of Muslim health facilities, the Ministry of Public Health with the support of Technical and Financial Partners, within the framework of CD2 initiated in Ngaoundéré in 2012, the creation of the RENAFSOM (National Network of Health Facilities of Muslim Obedience) to compensate for the inequitable nature of the subsidies granted to denominational health facilities. It certainly exists but suffers from rather glaring organizational and institutional deficiencies.
On the economic and social level, the State makes available to all Cameroonians, without discrimination, development projects and programs affecting all productive sectors. In addition to the need to set up a community support system for better capitalization of these projects and programs, it was noted to deplore the lack of initiatives in terms of large-scale productions in the Muslim environment and this despite the assets and opportunities offered by nature within our various agro-ecological zones.
Aware of all these challenges and especially of the imperative need to initiate reflection in order to seek endogenous solutions to community problems, the Muslim Community of Bamenda took the initiative to organize in May 2023, a conference on the theme What Model for Participatory and Inclusive Community Development?.
The conclusions of this conference exposed the urgent need for concrete actions to be carried out in the community. Eight main themes have been structured and entrusted to the facilitation of expert groups.
